Gang Awareness Commission

During a June 2007 Council meeting, Council Member Martin requested that the Council consider involving the community in the resistance of the growth of gangs in Lemoore. Council Member Martin suggested that he make recommendations on forming a community group to study the issue and advise the Lemoore City Council on ways to combat gangs. The City of Lemoore advertised and solicited membership to a community gang prevention effort. The Lemoore City Council approved the members of the Commission on Gang Awareness on August 7 and 21.

The first meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday, August 27, 2007 at 6 pm at the Lemoore Police Department. The commission will further meet twice a month on the first and third Mondays in the Lemoore City Council Chambers. The goal is for this commission to report back to the Council in January of 2008 with their recommendations and findings.

Anticipated topics of discussion are:

* The current state and history of gangs
* What the schools are presently doing
* What are other communities doing?
* Sales Tax or bond measures for public safety
* State initiatives including CAL GRIP Governor's program
* Solutions: Sales tax, Law enforcement, Education
* Who has passed measures for public safety and how are they using the funds?
