School will be out soon and it's time to start planning a summer trip.
Make securing your home a part of your vacation plans! Plan to take time
in advance to fix any doors, windows, locks and window locks that need
repair. Stop all deliveries and arrange for a trusted neighbor to check
your doors, pick-up your mail, and watch for any unusual activity around
your property. Be sure the "caretaker" has keys to your house and the
name of your insurance agent.
Write down the names and telephone numbers of the places you plan to
stay. Give one copy to your "caretaker" and one to the police
department, along with the name and number of your "caretaker". Hire
someone to mow the lawn, so it won't be obvious that no one is at home.
Connect electric timers to lights and radios in different parts of the
house, and also to porch and yard lights. Instruct your "caretaker" to
change the "on" and "off" times on them so the pattern will not be
obvious to anyone who may be watching the house.
Move large valuables where they can't be seen from windows, and put small
appliances out of sight to remove temptation. Items such as jewelry,
documents, and large sums of money, should be kept in a safe deposit box,
even when you are not on vacation. Lock all windows and sliding glass
doors. Leave curtains and shades open so the police and caretakers can
see inside. Lock you garage and any car left at home too.
Last, but not least, make a last-minute check to make sure everything has
been taken care of. Have someone go around to every door and window,
making sure each one is locked.
