Red Ribbon Celebration
2002

Lemoore Sports Complex
Lemoore, California

Saturday, October 19th, 2002

The National Family Partnership (NFP), founded in 1980 by concerned parents from around the United States, is a nationwide network of groups dedicated to nurturing healthy and drug free youth and families.

Red Ribbon Week is dedicated to the memory of Enrique Camarena. In 1985, Drug Enforcement Agent, Enrique Camarena was kidnapped, tortured and brutally murdered by a drug cartel. In response to the murder, parent associations, schools and communities banded together to stop the violence attributed to the drug war. The groups chose a red ribbon to "show intolerance for drugs in our schools, our work places, and our communities."

During the annual Red Ribbon Celebration, local communities hold events to increase awareness of the issues surrounding substance abuse and to encourage youths to choose a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Many schools dedicate the week to drug prevention and education with special lessons and activities.

Lemoore area schools participate in the nationally recognized Red Ribbon Week. The activities included:

(1) Door/Room Decorating Contest

(2) School Spirit Contest between all elementary schools

(3) Red Ribbon Drop with the assistance of the NAS Lemoore helicopter

(4) K-9 (Police Dog) Show

(5) A Red Ribbon Celebration
